Options for treating and disposing of FGD scrubber sludge
Options for treating and disposing of FGD scrubber sludge include blending coal-fired FGD dewatered sludge with the ever-present fly ash, fixation by adding lime to the blend to improve physical properties, and introduction of air to convert calcium sulfite to the sulfate, in each case followed by water removal with equipment such as hydroclones, centrifuges, and/or vacuum filters to give solid contents of 50-80, 50-80, and at least 80 3<, respectively, and by trucking to a remote landfill site. Annual total operating costs (in $/short ton) are estimated as 2.80, 3.91, and 1.96, respectively, for the three methods at a 500 Mw plant firing 3Vertical Bar3< sulfur coal, excluding trucking and land purchase costs for the landfill. Blended material can be land-filled if suitable geological conditions exist. Fixated material appears more appropriate for environmentally sensitive disposal sites. The combination of oxidized sludge and fly ash is generally lowest the cost disposal method.
