The Institute of Gas Technology has received a $144,000 contract from the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct a one-year study of the technical and economic feasibility of underground hydrogen storage. Hydrogen, in the form of compressed gas, metal hydrides, as a liquid, or as part of a decompressible chemical, is being considered as a storage vehicle for energy generated from nuclear or solar sources. The study will attempt to establish the engineering feasibility of geologic or engineered underground storage sites, will identify sites where hydrogen could be stored, will outline research needed for cost reduction and safety, and will estimate costs.
