Title: A case study investigation and remediation at New England Landfill Site containing DNAPL

Conference · · Ground Water; (United States)
OSTI ID:6839180

Over a period of 22 years industrial wastes, including liquid industrial solvents, were disposed of regularly at a town landfill. These dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPL) contaminated ground water and surface water with dissolved volatile organic compounds (VOC). Landfill leachate combined with VOC-contaminated ground water discharged into an adjacent wetland and a river bordering the site. The presence of DNAPL and the glacial geology limited alternatives for site remediation. Because contamination was naturally contained, and because there were no indications that contaminants from the site were impacting or would impact proposed public or private water supplies, the reviewing agency accepted a remedial alternative which included a landfill cap and the development of a ground water management zone. The landfill cap will significantly reduce the landfill leachate flow and migration of contaminants from the landfill materials to the adjacent wetlands and river. The establishment of a ground water management zone and ground water monitoring downgradient of the landfill will control access to the site and prevent the development of ground water resources within the contaminated area.
