Artificial derivatives E{sub 2}Co{sub 2}SOD and Cu{sup I}{sub 2}Co{sub 2}SOD of the native erthrocyte superoxide dismutase Cu{sub 2}Zn{sub 2}SOD investigated through {sup 1}H NMR spectroscopy elucidated the protons of the cobalt domain. The spectra were also recorded in D{sub 2}O. It is concluded that the spectra of the native E{sub 2}Co{sub 2}SOD and Cu{sup I}{sub 2}Co{sub 2}SOD do not show the ortho-like protons because they are too broadened by the hyperfine coupling with the paramagnetic centers. 19 refs., 4 figs.
