Properties of glasses and melts in the system MgO-AlN-SiO/sub 2/

The glassforming region at <1650/sup 0/C in the system MgO-AlN-SiO/sub 2/ was studied. The compositions studied varied in N/sub 2/ content from 3.9 at.% to 17.3 at.%. The melts which did not vitrify were also studied, and the crystalline phases were identified. Density, refractive index, microhardness, Young's modulus, fracture toughness, and crystallization behavior of the glasses are reported.
