Solvent extraction process for recovery of strontium, rare earths and cesium from radioactive waste solutions. [CSREX process]

A new solvent extraction process was developed for the simultaneous extraction of Cs, Sr, and the rare earths from acidic wastes. In this process, designated as CSREX, a mixture of di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and 4-sec-butyl-2-(..cap alpha..-methylbenzyl) phenol (BAMBP) in a kerosene-type diluent is used as the organic solvent. D2EHPA has a synergistic effect on the extractive properties of BAMBP, broadening the effective extraction pH range for Cs to a range of 3 to 14. Data are presented for the distribution of Cs, Sr, Ce, and Na as a function of D2EHPA and BAMBP concentrations and of phenol extractant.
