Reaction of sulfur dioxide with (eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/Me/sub 5/)Ru(CO)/sub 2/H: insertion of SO/sub 2/ into the Ru-H bond and oxygen transfer to form (eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/Me/sub 5/)Ru(CO/sub 2/)SO/sub 3/H

Any process that will convert SO/sub 2/ in stack gases to inoffensive products such as sulfur and water will be based on the reduction/oxygen transfer chemistry of SO/sub 2/. To better understand this chemistry, the authors have been investigating reactions of SO/sub 2/ with transition-metal hydride complexes. This work has now been extended to include the addition of SO/sub 2/to Cp*Ru(CO)/sub 2/H(Cp* = eta /sup 5/-C/sub 5/Me/sub 5/).
