This patent describes an improvement in an electrochemical device. It comprises: a containment vessel and optional ceramic material within the containment vessel and includes at lest one electrochemical cell. The cell comprises a porous, exposed electrode in contact with a solid electrolyte. The improvement is characterized in that at least one of the exposed electrode, the containment vessel, and the optional material within the containment vessel, contains a deposit selected from metal oxide and metal salt capable of forming metal oxide upon heating, where the metal is selected from the group consisting of Ce, Sm, Mg, Be, Ca, Sr, Ti, Zr, Hf, Y, La, Pr, Nb, Pm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Th, U, and mixtures thereof.
