Significant postradiation repair, as indicated by restoration of the capacity of skeletal muscles for posttraumatic regeneration, takes place in such muscles of young rats (particularly at the age of 3 to 4 weeks) within 1 month after local irradiation in a dosage of 2000 R. The regenerative capacity is not restored in old rats in muscles exposed to the same dose of radiation. Probably, the faster processes of postradiation recovery in muscles of young animals are attributable to their more active metabolism.
