On lowering the chemical potential of diatomic oxygen, the compound YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 4}O{sub 8} was found to decompose into a mixture of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 6+{ital x}} and CuO. The equilibrium oxygen potential corresponding to this decomposition has been measured from 870 to 1150 K using a solid-state cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen at a pressure of 1.01{times}10{sup 5} Pa as the reference electrode: Pt, O{sup {prime}}{sub 2} {vert bar} YBa{sub 2} Cu{sub 4}O{sub 8} + YBa{sub 2} Cu{sub 3} O{sub 6+{ital x}} + CuO {parallel} (Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}) ZrO{sub 2} {parallel} O{sub 2}(1.01 {times} 10{sup 5} Pa), Pt. The low oxygen potential boundary for the stability of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 4}O{sub 8} can be represented by {Delta}{mu}O{sub 2} = {minus}238 900 + 207.7 T({plus minus}800) J mol{sup {minus}1}. At the standard pressure of oxygen (1.01 {times} 10{sup 5} Pa) the decomposition occurs at 1150 K.
