Characterization of YBa sub 2 Cu sub 4 O sub 8 high temperature electrical properties and thermodynamic stability

Via {ital in} {ital situ} electrical property measurements (conductivity, Seebeck coefficient) over the temperature range 500--800 {degree}C and oxygen partial pressure range 10{sup {minus}4}--1 atm, the equilibrium transport properties and stability range of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 4}O{sub 8} were determined. YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 4}O{sub 8} behaves like the intrinsically mixed-valent compound, magnetite (Fe{sub 3}O{sub 4}), with small variations in electrical properties with changes in oxygen partial pressure. The decomposition boundary to YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 6+{ital y}} (or YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3.5}O{sub 7.5{plus minus}{ital z}}) and CuO occurs at log({ital p}{sub O{sub 2}},atm) ={minus}1.24{times}10{sup 4}/{ital T}(K)+11.01(773{le}{ital T}(K){le}1073).
