Based on previously published experimental results, reaction networks, and kinetics of the liquid-phase heterogeneously catalyzed oxidation of phenol, relationships were developed for determining the free radical initiation rate constant, the uninhibited and inhibited oxidizability of phenol at low and high catalyst loadings, the rate of free radical inhibitor consumption, the inhibited and uninhibited kinetic chain length (kcl), the kinetics of uninhibited and inhibited oxidation of phenol to phenyl hydroperoxide, and the length of the induction period; and for the steady-state regime, the free-radical initiation constant and kcl. A criterion for the critical catalyst concentration (CCC) was developed; the CCC is directly proportional to kcl and phenyl hydroperoxide concentration in solution, and it decreases with increasing free-radical initiation rate constant and with decreasing liquid-phase parameter and oxygen partial pressure.
