Many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a critical role in the photochemical formation of atmospheric ozone. Gas chromatography is well suited to the analysis of these compounds. However, the sample preparation for this analysis presents a significant challenge, as target compounds range from extremely volatile C2 gases to C12 compounds, all at low part-per-billion concentrations, and in the presence of water and CO{sub 2}. The system presented here allows for the automated analysis of whole air samples collected in stainless steel canisters, using a new autosampler/concentrator system designed specifically for this task. The Tekmar-Dohrmann AUTOCana autosampler has 16 sample positions. Operation is controlled from a PC using Windows{trademark}-based software. The operator has full flexibility to run samples in any order desired, using the same or different conditions for each analysis. Sample size can be varied, and each sample can be run multiple times. Internal and/or surrogate standards are automatically added to each sample. A QA/QC report is generated for each sample, and this can be immediately printed, stored to disk, or both. A sample report is illustrated in a figure.
