Hydride donation reactions of transition metal formyl complexes
Metal formyl complexes can transfer hydride to metal carbonyl compounds to produce new metal formyl complexes. The report states that metal formyl complexes can act as hydride donors to electrophiles such as ketones, alkyl halides, and metal carbonyls. The mechanisms of some of the reactions are discussed. Transformylation reactions between various metal formyl and metal carbonyl compounds indicate the following order of stability of formyl complexes relative to their metal carbonyl precursors ((C/sub 6/H/sub 5/)/sub 3/P)/sub 2/N/sup +/(CO)/sub 4/FeCHO/sup -/ greater than EtN/sup +/ cis (CO)/sub 9/Re/sub 2/CHO/sup -/ greater than (1) Et/sub 4/N/sup +/ trans- (C/sub 6/H/sub 5/O/sub 3/P)(CO)/sub 3/FeCHO/sup -/. The possibility that these transformylations proceed via decarbonylation to give a metal hydride which then transfers hydride to a metal carbonyl is excluded since the reaction of (1) with Re/sub 2/(CO)/sub 10/ or Fe(CO)/sub 5/ is faster than decomposition of (1) to (CO)/sub 4/ FeH/sup -/ and since Et/sub 4/N/sup +/(CO)/sub 4/FeH/sup -/ does not react with Re/sub 2/(CO)/sub 10/, Fe(CO)/sub 5/, or (CO)/sub 4/FeP-(OC/sub 6/H/sub 5/)/sub 3/ under the reaction conditions.
