Research report:Phytotoxicity of herbicides in water was measured before and after their exposure to gamma radiation from a cobalt-60 irradiator. Chromatographic methods and bioassays were used to measure alterations that occurred during exposure. Phytotoxicity of picloram and trifluralin solutions was reduced even with lower doses of cobalt-60. Alterations in phytotoxicity of atrazine and dicamba occurred only at 5 megarads, which was the highest dose used. Phytotoxicity of atrazine solutions increased with the 5 megarad irradiation. Thin-layer chromatography data showed that all herbicides were altered by cobalt-60 irradiation. (1 diagram, 13 references, 1 table)
