The results of several field tests indicate that in situ neutralization of unspent acid is effective in minimizing acid emulsion upset problems. The technique, which works by the acid-consuming hydrolysis reactions of various amides and urea, can be controlled so the returned fluids are at a pH conducive to demulsification. The system has been evaluated in the laboratory and has been found to have widespread application. This same technique should also be applicable where it is feared that unspent acid might corrode tubing and surface equipment.
