A thermogravimetric study on the effect of the phase composition of the support and added SiO/sub 2/ on structure formation in aluminum-nickel-molybdenum catalysts (ANMC) showed that in the ANMC samples prepared from pseudoboehmite, ..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (500 /sup 0/ C), ..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (700 /sup 0/ C), theta-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and ..cap alpha..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, different amounts of aluminum-molybdenum and nickel-molybdenum compounds are formed. In going from pseudoboehmite to ..cap alpha..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, less aluminum-molybdenum compounds are formed in the ANMC and more nickel-molybdenum or aluminum-nickel-molybdenum compounds are formed. The introduction of SiO/sub 2/ also increases the concentration of the nickel-molybdenum compounds which are the precursors of the catalytically active phases.
