Characterization of TiB/sub 2/-Ni ceramics by transmission and analytical electron microscopy

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6807499
A series of TiB/sub 2/-Ni ceramics fabricated using different TiB/sub 2/ powders have been examined. It has been determined that the amount of intergranular phase observed decreases as the mean particle size of the TiB/sub 2/ decreases, the excess initial nickel content being exuded from the compacts during hot pressing. Both conventional electron microscopy; and AEM techniques have been used to identify the primary intergranular phase in the hot-pressed TiB/sub 2/-Ni composites. X-ray microanalysis showed that the phase contained nickel and titanium, with Ni:Ti > 20. Convergent beam electron diffraction as well as selected area diffraction established that the crystal structure was orthorhombic.
