Citizenship via environmental education: an alternative
Journal Article

There has been a recent attempt by educators and social scientists to revitalize citizenship education in schools. Increases in vandalism and the juvenile crime rate, especially among elementary school age pupils, have raised concern about the schools' ability to develop contributing citizens. A unification of environmental education and social studies may be a viable approach to helping children develop citizenship. It would provide students with the opportunity to interact with their environment with purposeful activity. (8 references)
