Study of the E(1420) region at 10 GeV/c

We have measured the cross section for the inclusive reaction ..pi../sup +/d..-->..K/sub s//sup 0/S/sup + -/..pi../sup - +/+X at 10 GeV/c using the large-aperture solenoid spectrometer at SLAC. We measure the product of the cross section and branching ratio, sigma(..pi../sup +/d..-->..E+X)B(E..-->..K/sub s//sup 0/K/sup + -/ ..pi../sup - +/), to be 1.7 +- 0.4 ..mu..b. We find that the K/sub s//sup 0/S/sup + -/..pi../sup - +/ decay of the E meson appears to be dominated by the K*K-bar decay mode, and the data are consistent with the spin-parity assignment of J/sup P/ = 1/sup +/ for the E meson.
