D(1285) and E(1420) production in anti pp. -->. (K/sup +/K/sub s/. pi. /sup -/)x at 6. 6 GeV/c

The author has observed the D(1285) and E(1420) mesons in the interaction anti pp ..-->.. (K/sup +/K/sub s/..pi../sup -/)X with a anti p beam at 6.6 GeV/c. The data were taken at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Multiparticle Spectrometer facility in the spring of 1983. The author has 420 D events and 620 E events in a sample of 11,686 total events. The author has fitted the K/sup +/K/sub s/..pi../sup -/ mass spectrum, corrected for acceptance, with two Breit-Wigner functions and background. The author has performed a Dalitz plot/Zemach analysis using intermediate decay modes delta..pi.. and K*K and spin-parity/G-parity J/sup PG/ 0/sup - +/, 0/sup - -/, 1/sup + +/, 1/sup + -/, 1/sup - +/, 1/sup - -/. The author finds the D to have mass (1.277 +/- .002) GeV and width (32 +/- 8) MeV and to be consistent with J/sup PG/ = 1/sup + +/, decay mode delta..pi... The author finds the E to have mass (1.424 +/- .003) GeV and width (60 +/- 10) MeV, with J/sup PG/ = 1/sup + +/ and decay mode predominantly delta..pi.., with some K*K present. The author finds a large non-resonant 1/sup + +/ K*K background in the E region. The results of the E analysis compare well with those from the ..pi../sup -/ p ..-->.. (K/sup +/K/sub s/..pi../sup -/)n experiment performed at the same facility by the same collaboration.
