Environmental challenges will need cooperative solutions
- American Petroleum Institute, Washington, DC (US)
What are the major environmental challenges facing the petroleum industry, now and in the near future. There are at least four: Developing better scientific information, technologies, and analytical techniques to solve environmental problems. Improving public access to information on petroleum operations and products and increasing public confidence in such operations and products. Linking environmental protection with other important national goals such an enhancing our competitiveness in international markets, improving the balance of trade, and improving productivity. Developing and articulating a strategy to more effectively participate in the public debate over environmental policy and devising constructive solutions in partnership with the government and the citizenry. API's health and environmental research program currently consists of five major components: air, waste, water, fuels, and hazard evaluation and communication. This paper discusses these programs.
