Greenhouse warming: What do we know

The continuing emissions of gases that are able to increase the efficiency with which the atmosphere traps infrared radiation are beginning to alter the global climate. During the next century, theoretical simulations project that global average temperatures will rise by several degrees Celsius above their pre-industrial baseline and that precipitation patterns may shift seasonally and spatially. Although research is being intensified so that detailed regional estimates can be provided, projected increases in summer temperatures and the accompanying increased evaporation, especially during natural warm excursions such as the summer of 1988, appear to pose troubling conditions for water supplies, agriculture, transport, and other activities dependent on water resources. 9 refs., 2 tabs.
