Process for removing H/sub 2/S and CO/sub 2/ from gases and regenerating the adsorbing solution

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6801046
An improved process is proposed for regenerating aqueous ammonium, sodium, and potassium hydroxide solutions commonly used to remove hydrogen sulfide from tail gases at natural gas treatment plants. Unlike previous methods, the process selectively recovers almost all impurities (including carbon dioxide) as sulfur dioxide or sulfur and corresponding alkaline solutions that are reusable as H/sub 2/S absorption agents. The process comprises contacting the aqueous ammonium, sodium, or potassium sulfide solution with pulverized copper oxide. The resulting copper sulfide precipitate is separated, and the solution of increased sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or ammonia content is recycled as absorbent for hydrogen sulfide and CO/sub 2/. The copper sulfide is roasted to form recyclable copper oxide and product sulfur dioxide.
