Tank vessels of 10,000 gross tons or more. improved steering gear standards
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) proposes to adopt improved steering gear standards for tank vessels of 10,000 gross tons or more. Adoption of the regulations in this proposal would reduce the probability of collision and grounding of tankers caused by steering failure, and as a result, would reduce the risk of property damage, personal injury and death, and pollution of the oceans and U.S. waters. The regulations would apply both to U.S. tank vessels and to foreign vessels that call at U.S. ports. This notice also withdraws an earlier USCG proposal to improve steering gear standards. Comments must be received by the USCG on or before 4/16/79. Public hearings will be held on 3/21/79 and 3/28/79.
