Morrison-Knudsen Co., Inc., Boise, is close to finishing construction on the U.S.'s first utility-owned powerplant fueled by wood waste. Construction began early in 1982 after about 25% of the design work was completed in Boise. The turnkey contract with the Washington Water Power Co., Spokane, allowed M-K to overlap the design and construction phases of the utility's 42-Mw Kettle Falls power plant. Total cost of the plant is estimated at $88 million. Wood waste was chosen as a fuel source because there are few pulp or paper mills to use it. Sawmills will supply 360,000 of the 500,000 tons per year required.
