Fushun surface mine to undergo major expansion

The Fushun West Open Pit mine in Liaoning province, one of the largest surface mines in the world, is being expanded to an annual production of 5,000,000 tons of clean coal and 8,000,000 tons of oil shale. Feasibility studies have been completed and work will begin immediately. Coal production is currently 3,500,000 tons per year. China National Coal Development Corporation has contracted Fluor Mining and Metals Inc. to handle engineering and design services associated with mine planning, equipment selection, and modernization of materials handling. CNCDC will participate in the detail design work. The agreement with Fluor marks the first time that the Ministry of Coal Industry has entered into a contract for engineering services with a foreign company. The Fushun open pit mine is about 6.6 kilometers (4 miles) on strike, 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles) across, and 480 meters (1584 feet) deep. Output has totalled over 1,000,000,000 tons of overburden (including bituminous shales) and 160,000,000 tons of coal. In-pit haulage at Fushun is done by rail, with separate rail systems for overburden, shale, and coal haulage. Reserves for open pit mining are still extensive. Total reserves at Fushun, which also includes the Longfeng and Laohutai underground mines, equal 949,660,000 tons of coal and some 3,617,130,000 tons of oil shale. The oil shale averages 118 meters (383 feet) in thickness and has an average oil content of 7 to 8 percent, the equivalent of about 20 barrels of oil per ton. Only the oil shale and the upper coal seam are mined in the open pit. The two underground operations mine the upper and lower coal seam.
