This mine, which is 6.6 kilometers long, 2.2 kilometers wide, and 218 meters deep, produces 4,500,000 tons of coal and 12,000,000 tons of oil shale per year. Fushun West open cast coal mine, combining the dual function of producing both coal and oil shale, could lay claim without fear of contradiction to being the largest operation of its kind in the world. The coal formation is Tertiary in age and the geological structure of the measures is basically a syncline whose inclination varies from 20 to 40 degrees. The seam varies in thickness from 40 meters in the eastern section of the mine to 120 meters in the west; it averages 80 meters overall. The oil shales lie immediately above the seam and vary from 50 to 115 meters in thickness averaging 83 meters over the mine property. An oil distillation plant, situated to the north of the mine, is able to cope adequately with all the oil shale produced. Above the oil shales are green shales which average 360 meters in thickness and above these are 15 to 20 meters of soil.
