An ion beam apparatus was used to examine the reactions of U/sup +/ with CH/sub 3/F, SiF/sub 4/, CH/sub 3/Cl, and CCl/sub 4/. Reaction with the methyl halides to yield UX/sup +/ is exothermic for both X = F and Cl. Reaction with the tetrahalides yields both UX/sup +/ and UX/sub 2//sup +/. With CCl/sub 4/, these processes are exothermic while with SiF/sub 4/, they are endothermic. Interpretation of the threshold for UF/sup +/ formation from SiF/sub 4/ allows the values D/sup 0/(U/sup +/-F) = 113 +/- 12 kcal/mol and ..delta..H/sub f//sup 0/(UF/sup +/) = 177 +/- 13 kcal/mol to be derived. When an estimate of 6.7 +/- 1 eV is used for the ionization potential of uranium monofluoride, ..delta..H/sub f//sup 0/(UF) = 22 +/- 27 kcal/mol and D/sup 0/(U-F) = 125 +/- 27 kcal/mol are also derived.
