According to H. P. Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd., growing demand for product tankers will soon create a shortage of tankers smaller than 60,000 dwt; the deficit may be 15 million dwt by 1980, more than 30 million by 1983, and 50 million by 1985. Drewry expects the small-tanker fleet size to total about 86.3 million dwt by mid-1979 declining to 83 million by mid-1980 and 57 million by mid-1985 as a result of scrapping. Most of this tonnage will be in the 60,000-100,000 dwt range. The fleet of tankers smaller than 60,000 dwt will total 39 million dwt in mid-1980 and less than 24 million by mid-1985, compared with 47 milllion at mid-1978. This high demand for small tankers, which form a separate market from that for tankers over-all, is in spite of a drop in transshipments from the Caribbean to the U.S. gulf coast from 180 million tons in 1980 to 80 million tons in 1985 as the LOOP deepwater terminal begins operation.
