Drewry advises against ordering big tankers

According to H.P. Drewry (Shipping Consultants) Ltd., oil shippers considering investment in new crude tankers should start with vessels smaller than 100,000 dwt, but buy used, rather than new, medium-size tankers. For carriers smaller than 60,000 dwt, currently in short supply, 28 million dwt of new tonnage will be required by 1990, equivalent to about 3.1 million dwt/yr, or just less than 90 new ship orders per year. For 60,000-99,999 dwt tankers, the supply is currently adequate, but by 1990, increased demand caused by increasing short-haul trade may cause a shortage of 38 million dwt, unless 4.3 million dwt/yr, equivalent to 53 orders per yr of the 80,000 dwt tankers, are built during 1980-1990. For the medium-size 100,000-174,999 dwt tankers, the market is currently oversupplied by 9 million dwt, but by 1990, there could be a shortfall of 30 million dwt, creating a demand for about 24 vessels per yr through the 1980's. Factors affecting the demand for medium-size tankers include the role of combined carriers, uncertainty over vessel efficiency levels, the effects of a deepened Suez Canal, and prospects of further competition from surplus VLCC's.
