Energy-price surges affect growth, profits, structure of US industries

Rapid energy cost increases accelerate structural changes in American industry. Data from the eight most energy-intensive US manufacturing industries indicate that the success in reducing energy consumption is less than that of other sectors, but that this may be due to a prior energy efficiency that allowed fewer opportunities for more savings. Product prices from the eight industries rose an average of 25 percent relative to the consumer price index and will probably average 15 percent until 1984. Output, on the other hand, rose slower (except for the two chemical sectors) than the materials-producing industries as a whole. Investment capital may shift from manufacturing to nonmanufacturing industries as a result. Investment for expansion will drop in those industries with a slower sales growth, but this will be offset by the expansion of energy-extraction and energy-conservation industries. (DCK)
