Pollution prevention has become a mandate for manufacturing companies across the country. The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 provides a hierarchy of four basic means to prevent pollution: source reduction, recycling, treatment and disposal. The author presents examples of pollution prevention practices in a number of manufacturing plants. She concludes that although pollution prevention requires a large expenditure of manpower, time and money, the companies reap benefits for themselves and their employees by avoiding possible risks to human health and the environment.
