This patent describes a packer assembly for use in a subterranean well and settable in the well only by longitudinal manipulation of a tubular workstring. It comprises: an outer housing; a seal assembly and anchoring means carried by the housing in initial retracted position and movable to expanded position for engagement along the inner wall of a tubular conduit disposed within the well; a longitudinally extending control mandrel telescopically movable within the housing, at least one of the housing and the control mandrel operably extending from the workstring; orienting and setting pins carried on one of the housing and the control mandrel; orienting slot means having a first length and running slot means having a second length shorter than the first length, each of the slot means being defined on the other of the housing and the control mandrel for receipt of the orienting and setting pins, respectively; and means for manipulating the housing relative to the mandrel to a first position to orient the pins and the slot means.
