Age dependent retention of /sup 212/Pb in the skeleton following /sup 224/Ra uptake

The purpose of this paper is to summarize unpublished analyses of the /sup 212/Pb retention data and to provide numerical estimates of the variation of /sup 212/Pb//sup 224/Ra with age in humans. The principal conclusions are that skeletal /sup 212/Pb//sup 224/Ra increases with time after injection, increases with increasing body weight among species, increases with decreasing bone surface-to-volume ratio, and most likely increases with age in humans. These results will have practical implications to the dosimetry of /sup 224/Ra and its daughter products in humans. In studies of cancer induction by the /sup 224/Ra decay series, subjects have been as young as one year at injection, and a large fraction of the tumors have appeared in subjects exposed as juveniles. The chance that dosimetric data will become available from observations on humans is very small. Interspecies extrapolations such as the one summarized here will be necessary to adjust and refine dosimetry for humans. 13 refs., 6 tabs.
