Changeover from rate-determining electron transfer to rate-determining proton transfer in the oxidation of alkyl aromatic compounds by ceric ammonium nitrate

The deuterium kinetic isotope effect in the side-chain oxidation of some alkyl aromatic compounds with ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) has been determined. The reaction kinetics were determined by following the disappearance of CAN spectrophotometrically. The results of the studies confirm the previously accepted radical cation mechanism for the reaction. (BLM)
