The following methods were investigated for the separation of lanthanides such as La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Y in ceric ammonium nitrate: (1) fractional crystallization of ceric ammonium nitrate; (2) treatment of nitrocerite complex anion with cation exchanger; and (3) extraction of ceric ammonium nitrate using TBP as a solvent. Rare earth impurities were measured with the aid of radiotracer techniques. In the course of the first operation, the co-crystallization ratio of rare earth elements to cerium was 0.03 (La) to 0.06 (Eu). In the course of the second method, the distribution coefficients of Ln(III) were 10/sup 5/ to 400, varying as to concentration of solution. ln the course of the third method, the ratio of extraction of La to Sm were 0.006 to 1.23%, and 99.9 to 98.5% of La to Sm in organic phase were stripped by 6N nitric acid.
