LNG keeps growing around the World
Nearly 175 LNG projects are in operation, under construction, planned, or proposed on six continents, 135 of them in the U.S. and Canada. The projects include 71 peakshaving plants (58 in North America), 14 baseload plants (3 in the U.S.), and 30 import receiving terminals (13 in the U.S.). The remainder are satellite peakshaving operations, all in North America. Among the major ventures are the construction of Northern Natural Gas Co.'s $36 million LNG peakshaving plant in Hancock Co., Iowa; the operation by the Metropolitan Utility District of Omaha, Nebr., of a peakshaving plant which can liquefy 6.6 million ft/sup 3//day of gas and has a storage capacity of 290,000 bbl; and Texas Eastern Transmission Corp.'s construction of two 600,000-bbl storage tanks at its Staten Island, N.Y., facility. Northwestern Public Service Co. is reported to be planning a major LNG peakshaving plant, probably in South Dakota. Internationally, Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co. formed a partnership with Moore-McCormack Bulk Transport Inc. to build and operate two LNG tankers to transport 165 million ft/sup 3//day gas equivalent from Algeria. SONATRACH awarded an $800 million contract to the Pullman Kellogg division of Pullman Inc. to design, build, and start up the 1 billion ft/sup 3//day LNG-2 facility at Arzew, Algeria, and another contract to Bechtel International Inc. to complete the LNG-1 facility at Arzew, begun by Chemical Construction Corp.
