The development of industrial processes to manufacture at relatively low pressure a very high quality linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) has considerably influenced the market potential of butene-1. Not only can butene-1 be polymerized directly to polybutene, but butene-1 is finding greater use as a comonomer with ethylene in the manufacture of various types of polyethylenes, mainly LLDPE (see accompanying box). This paper presents a process which will produce butene-1 by selectively dimerizing ethylene. The process uses a homogeneous catalyst system where reactants, products and catalyst are all soluble in the same liquid phase---thereby avoiding some of the disadvantages of heterogenous catalysts. The catalyst system also avoids isomerization of butene-1 to butene-2 and hence there is no need for product superfractionation.
