Technology and economics of butene-1 recovery

Conference · · AIChE Natl. Meet.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5875447
Butene-1 has long been used in a mixed stream of butylene isomers for blending in gasoline and for making gasoline alkylate - an octane booster. The use of butene-1 as a high purity chemical has been limited both in terms of the variety of applications and the growth rates of these markets. However, on the strength of an emerging market for linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), in which butene-1 is a key comonomer, a long term supply of pure butene-1 will be required. In this paper, various techniques of butene-1 production are discussed. Relative economics of each of the techniques are presented and predictions made as to the likely path for producers.
