This report spans two complex technologies, coal preparation, and instrumentation and controls. Many readers of this document may be well versed in one technology but only casually familiar with the other. For this reason, and because the project responsibility and viewpoint are broad, this report discusses not only automation as practiced in the United States coal preparation industry but the following topics as well: background of the United States coal industry, purpose of coal preparation, and information on advanced instrumentation and controls - those available now and those being developed. Other topics are included: work of foreign nations in this field, potential benefits of increased automation, and needed advances in instrumentation available for this industry, including progress in hardware and process analysis. 236 references.
