This report (appearing in a final version and then a corrected earlier version) gives data in terms of amounts of sulfur per (metric) ton of gasoline or per hour of operation for various materials involved in coal hydrogenation. Sulfur was introduced into the process in the coal (21 kg in the two tons of coal used to produce one ton of gasoline); and in the catalyst (10.5 kg per ton of gasoline) these figures were equivalent to about 995 kg/hr of sulfur. Sulfur came out of the process in many ways, including sulfur compounds dissolved in water produced at various stages in the process, sulfur compounds dissolved in washing solutions, sulfur compounds contained in residues, and hydrogen sulfide in various gases. Water produced in the liquid phase contained about 250 kg/hr and water produced in the vapor phase contained about 240 kg/hr. The water used for washing the hydrogenation gases contained about 60 kg/hr, and the lye solution used for washing contained an estimated 60 kg/hr also. The carbonization residue contained 114 kg/hr. Several gases arising in the process contained less than 8 g of H/sub 2/S per m/sup 3/, including the off-gases produced in the liquid-phase chambers (2.3 kg/hr of sulfur) and in the vapor-phase chamber (9.5 kg/hr), the gases from carbonization of residues (2.0 kg/hr,) the gases coming off with the residues before carbonization (4.9 kg/hr), and the circulating gases at the washing stage (15.0 kg/hr). Some other gases contained more than 8 g of H/sub 2/S per m/sup 3/, including the hydrogenation gases and circulating gases at certain decompression stages and distillation stages (147.0 kg/hr in all for liquid phase and 67.0 kg in all for vapor phase). These amounts of sulfur in products totaled 971.7 kg/hr, which was within 2.3% of the 995 kg/hr of sulfur introduced.
