Aeroderivative engine reliability and availability
- Stewart and Stevenson Services, Inc., Houston, TX (United States). Gas Turbine Products Div.
Availability and reliability performance data for aero-derivative gas turbines in cogeneration service has not been well reported in the literature. Important decisions are being made by owner/operators, regulators and utility system planners on their concept of the performance of independent power producer (IPP) cogeneration plants without a knowledge of the actual, long-term operating experience of the IPP industry. It is incumbent on the IPP industry to embrace a standardized methodology for reporting performance data and to make utility system planners aware of the excellent operating record of aero-derivative engines. Stewart and Stevenson Operations, Inc. (SSOI) has taken a leadership role in the IPP industry by tracking and reporting important performance parameters such as reliability, availability, forced outage rate, scheduled outage factor, and other similar parameters by plant and region. Unlike other IPPs, however, SSOI has elected to use the utility reporting methods defined by North American Reliability Council (NERC) in order to more closely compare cogeneration performance with results reported by the electric utilities. In addition, SSOI has derived a number of new performance parameters that are unique to cogeneration systems such as on-peak availability factor. The overall results of this five year study indicate a regional average reliability factor of 98.8%, availability factor of 94.3%, a forced outage rate of 1.3% and a scheduled outage factor of 4.4%.
