An environmental concern about municipal solid waste landfills is the leachate they generate. Because of this concern, one of the key components of modern landfills, in addition to the bottom linear and a cover system, is the system to collect leachate. The importance of liquids management has led to development of sophisticated systems involving various combinations of natural and geosynthetic materials. Successful systems - those that efficiently collect leachate and transmit it to a point for removal for periods of more than 30 years - require both proper design and good construction techniques. This article provides recommendations for proper construction of the various system components, including the drainage layer, the collection pipe network, the sump, and filter and buffer layers.
