Using pulverized glass as a landfill liner system protective cover and leachate drainage layer

Landfill flexible membrane liner systems require a cover layer to protect the geosynthetic layers from damage placement of waste. Commonly, a fine or coarse aggregate is used as a protective cover which can also serve as a leachate collection layer. Materials with a high carbonate content are prohibited from use by some regulatory authorities to reduce the potential for problems associated with scaling and clogging of leachate collection pipes and pumps. In certain geographic areas, low carbonate aggregates are expensive and difficult to obtain. Meanwhile, as recycling of household wastes expands, there is a need to identify additional end-use markets for collected materials including mixed, broken glass. Recognizing the opportunity of supply and demand at their location, an integrated waste processing facility consisting of a materials recovery facility (MRF) and solid waste disposal landfill developed a program to demonstrate the possibility of utilizing pulverized glass as a protective cover layer and leachate collection zone. A series of laboratory and field tests demonstrated to the satisfaction of the owner, consultants, and regulatory community that pulverized glass could function as a protective layer and leachate collection layer, and in fact, we believe, it may perform better than natural aggregates in the long term. Testing included the construction of a test pad which modeled the actual liner/leachate collection system proposed for the solid waste disposal facility and placing the pulverized glass using actual equipment to be used in the liner system installation.
