Pulverized glass and landfill liner systems

Landfill flexible membrane liner systems require a cover layer to protect the geosynthetic layers from damage during placement of waste. Commonly, a fine aggregate is used as a protective cover, which also can serve as a leachate collection layer. Meanwhile, as recycling of household wastes expands, there is a need to identify additional end-use markets for collected materials, including mixed, broken glass. Recognizing the opportunity of supply and demand at their location, operators of an integrated waste processing facility consisting of a materials recovery facility (MRF) and solid waste disposal landfill developed a program to demonstrate the possibility of utilizing pulverized glass as a protective cover layer and leachate collection zone. A recent series of laboratory and field tests demonstrated to the satisfaction of the owner, consultants, and regulatory community that pulverized glass could function as a protective layer and leachate collection layer, and in fact, it may perform better than natural aggregates in the long term. Testing included the construction of a test pad, which modeled the actual liner/leachate collection system proposed for the solid waste disposal facility, and placement of the pulverized glass using actual equipment to be used in the liner system installation.
