The success of South Africa as a coal exporter is recounted. Exports increased from 2.7 million t in 1975 to 30 million t in 1981. Low production costs, continuity of supply and low sulphur content have made South African coal competitive despite high transportation costs. The development of Richards Bay terminal and the associated railway system are described. Future plans for the industry are indicated.
