Kinematics of the gross structures in the. cap alpha. spectrum of the /sup 16/O+/sup 12/C reaction

A kinematic analysis of broad peaks seen in the reaction /sup 12/C(/sup 16/O,..cap alpha..) is performed which demonstrates that contrary to previous speculations most of these structures are not states in /sup 24/Mg. Much weaker structures with E/sub x/( /sup 24/Mg)approx. =25 and 28 MeV are identified as clusters of several narrow /sup 24/Mg states.
