Interpretation of gross structures in the energy spectra of the reaction /sup 12/C(/sup 16/O,. cap alpha. )/sup 24/Mg
Recent studies of the reaction /sup 12/C(/sup 16/O,..cap alpha..)/sup 24/Mg at E(/sup 16/O) = 145 MeV have revealed the existence of several broad states with E/sub x/(/sup 24/Mg) = 20 to 60 MeV, which have been interpreted as members of the /sup 12/C+/sup 12/C molecular band J/sup ..pi../ = (10/sup +/) through J/sup ..pi../ = (18/sup +/). Subsequent investigation, however, has failed to reveal the expected partial width for /sup 24/Mg*..-->../sup 12/C+/sup 12/C. We show that these states can be interpreted as an extension of the /sup 24/Mg yrast sequence which is populated by the well understood high-spin selectivity of ..cap alpha..-particle evaporation from a /sup 28/Si compound nucleus.
