Some considerations concerning extra high voltage ac cable power transmission

In 1958, the first 380-kV overhead lines were energized in France, and the first 380-kV cable sections were connected to the system of the Roselend hydroelectric Plant. It is difficult to state what the next voltage step will be and what adaptations will have to be made. The aim of the present study was to indicate some general ideas concerning the choice of technique and of the cable specifications best suited to meet the problems that may arise with ac underground power transmission. These considerations show that either a technical or an economical optimization is possible and do not pretend to be an exhaustive study of the subject. However, they should be considered as a basis for the study of particular cases and as a guide for adopting solutions.
